About

Art-Enfant - Wondering what the name Art-enfant has to do with children's toys? Yes, we sell lots of toys that we hope will inspire children to develop their artistic nature, but the name really has much more to do with our history and how we began.

The Official Story

Art-enfant began life as a children’s gift section in the back of the well-established framing store, Art-en-ciel, hence the name. Owner Judi Meade had successfully opened a custom framing business and started a family in the same year, 1981. As a young working mother, her children were frequent visitors to the store and catering to families in the same stage of life became a central part of the business. Framing art for and by children was a natural interest and became a strong segment of her business.

Longtime residents of Westmount will remember how the toys began appearing and then slowly took over the children's art section. Their popularity soon created a mini toy store within a store. It became obvious that Art-enfant would soon need a store of its own and when the opportunity arose in 2002, Art-en-ciel moved across the street where it continues to operate today.

In the few short years since then, Art-enfant has established itself as the neighbourhood destination for inspiring children’s toys. In May 2005, Art-enfant moved to its current location. This bustling little toy store is packed to the gills with imaginative, fun and educational toys.

The Real Story

Judi has a passion for great toys: the kind that inspire wonder and learning – but most especially FUN! As her own kids were growing up and moving on, she wasn’t ready to let go of that pleasure. Art-enfant was her way of sharing it with so many more. She was finally putting her degree in Early Childhood Education to use.

Our Staff

Drop by the store any day of the week and you will meet one of these two helpful and charming ladies. They know every toy we have in stock inside out and backwards. And they know all about how kids and how they’ll play with them. Just ask them.

Connie DeMelo, Store Manager

Connie came to Art-enfant with a full slate of toy expertise garnered through mothering two creative, rambunctious girls. Their energy is matched only by that of their fun-loving Mom.

Jennifer Topp, Assistant Store Manager

Jen began working at Art-enfant while completing her Masters Thesis in Art Therapy and never left. We think she stays because she can't bear to leave the toys behind. But she's putting her education to great use advising customers on the best toys to aid in their child's development.

Judi Meade, Owner

You won't see Judi in the store too often but her presence is there all of the time. She gets to have her fun, doing all the research and buying, otherwise known as playing.
